The restart of Thessaloniki metro



The construction of Thessaloniki Metro has been a sore issue for years. After many delays a new period started a few days ago as the construction works restarted after four years. The Greek Minister MrSpirtzis in the presence of the General Secretary of Ministry Mr. Dedes and the President and the Managing Director of Attiko Metro Mr. Milopoulos and Mrs. Papadopoulou announced the beginning of the works and their completion by 2020.
The first machine for the construction of the tunnel began a month ago from “Nea Elvetia” station towards to the west at “Analipsi” station. Moreover, a second machine is expected to start the second opening of the tunnel these days so as the last 1,890 meters of the two twin tunnels to be constructed. So far 75% of the total length of the tunnel has been implemented, while its construction will be completed by the end of the year.
Simultaneously, on February 19th, 2016 the 2nd Supplementary Convention of 25.000.000,00€ total budget was signed in reference to the archaeological research and the archaeological works started again. 82% of the excavation work has already been carried out and the archaeological works that remains are related only to a total of six stations. Moreover, the construction works have been started again in 9 construction sites since early March, while the works are continuing also in all five stations in the extension of the Metro line to Kalamaria.
