Greener railway is going to happen through high capacity electrification line from Yorkshire and West Midlands to South Coast ports. Electric trains enabling faster and cheaper trips for the railway operators. Minister believes that electrification will allow more freight tonnage in railways and they will reduce carbon emissions.
There will be also an upgrade of the Midland Main Line between Sheffield and Bedford, electrification of the lines from Nuneaton and Bedford to Oxford, Reading, Basingstoke and Southampton, completion of the electrification of the Great Western Main Line beyond Cardiff to Swansea, and electrifying the Welsh Valley lines, including Ebbw Vale, Maesteg and the Vale of Glamorgan.
David Cameron, Prime Minister of UK believes that this step is the "biggest modernisations of UK railways since Victorian times".
Since now, electric railways offer reduced energy consumption and maintenance costs but they have much more horsepower.
