Smart Commuting for European cities

In European cities, the daily commute to and from work is a major energy consumer. SMART COMMUTING project encourages coordination between public transport companies, city officials and other stakeholders to develop a holistic approach to planning more energy efficient  transportation in urban areas. Training for public sector workers, expert analyses and the creation of institutional platforms will support better planning of sustainable transport.

The ERDF-funded INTERREG Central Europe project ‘Smart Commuting’ is coordinated by the Municipality of Rimini in Italy and will last till May 2020. A transnational strategy for smarter commuting, an institutional platform with results and reports, 14 pilot actions for low-carbon mobility and 15 training sessions on low-carbon solutions are the main outputs of the project.

Urban European Initiative: urban mobility projects

After a competitive process that saw 206 proposals submitted in April 2017 from across 21 EU Member States, 16 urban authorities will have the opportunity to experiment bold and innovative solutions to tackle the challenges linked to the circular economy, the integration of migrants and refugees and urban mobility.

Sharing gets you further

The 2017 European Mobility Week (16-22 September 2017) is held under the theme of clean, shared and intelligent mobility, as encapsulated by the slogan 'Sharing gets you further'. By using shared forms of transport we can reduce our expenses and lower our carbon footprint. Best of all, we can meet new people and make our journey more sociable.

Smart technology, such as apps and online platforms are already helping to make mobility more efficient, saving us money and helping the environment. New applications have made it easier than ever before to manage our mobility together. Studies show that embracing shared mobility can have a positive impact on our towns and cities: each shared car, for example, takes approximately 15 private cars off the road.Sharing also enables us to mix transport types more easily. Driving, cycling, public transport - it's all possible when we share.

​In 2017, EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK invites local politicians and the public to experience the benefits of shared mobility. Cities, NGOs, business sector and schools can get involved in European Mobility Week and register their mobility actions, test new forms of clean mobility and progress towards more sustainable mobility for Europe. For the time being only 14 cities are participating but the number is expected to increase a lot, considering that in 2016 2.427 towns and cities have participated in the campaign.

Use of ICT (Information Communication Technologies) for collecting traffic data and communicating with passengers as tools to support Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP)

On March the 2nd the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas along with the Region of Central Macedonia organize an event to introduce best practices and ICT tools used in view of collecting data and involving passengers in the formulation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.

The event is organized in the framework of REFORM project - Integrated Regional Action Plan for Innovative, Sustainable and Low Carbon Mobility – funded by the European Regional Development Fund within INTERREG EUROPE program.

REFORM aims to ease the transition towards low-carbon alternatives for mobility by developing guidance materials and organising a series of dedicated events to help local municipalities in the preparation of their SUMP. The expected result is the improvement of Regional Operational Programs in such a way so as to enable funding and, thus, wider implementation of SUMPs by municipalities. This will be achieved via transferring best practices that support all stages of SUMP, from educating the technical staff of municipalities till defining basic priorities that SUMPs should serve at regional level.
