Free public transport is no more a dream from the future

The new formed coalition government of Luxembourg with the Prime Minister Xavier Bettel after the last elections took plans to make the public transport free of charge. This is a reaction of growing traffic congestions, which are leading to big air pollutions.

Every day about 400 000 commuters cross the border going to work to Luxembourg City, which is a home for about 107 000 citizens. This cyclic movement of people demands a permanent solution.
The previous government of Bettel already made steps to lower the problems by starting a program for transport free of charge for young people under the age of 20. Program includes also a free shuttle busses for students from their homes to the place of study.
The last step, from the incoming summer, will be to eliminate the transport fees at all. This should stimulate citizens of Luxembourg and the incoming everyday visitors to abandon personal transport style and to start using the public transport net. When this happens Luxembourg will be the very first country with free public transport service.
