The dispatcher workplace of Prague Integrated Transport has been in operation since June 2012. Its operator is a contributory organization of City of Prague ROPID (Regional Manager of Prague Integrated Transport).
The main task of the dispatching centre is to monitor the operation of the routes of the carriers involved in the Prague Integrated Transport System (PID), to supervise the adherence to the timetables and to ensure the mutual guaranteed connections so that the passengers get where they need and on time.
Seven dispatchers in two shifts track more than 2,600 vehicles of nineteen transport companies. In addition to (over a thousand) buses, there are also trains and ferries.
In order to be connected to the dispatching system, vehicles are equipped with an on-line GPS positioning system. Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring software tool (MPV; by CHAPS company) ROPID uses to monitor vehicle positioning and timing evaluation.
The dispatching staff begins their working day at 5 o'clock in the morning, their main task is to monitor the current position of all vehicles. MPV compares real data with scheduled timetables and automatically generates alerts about any deviations. All operational problems are addressed as soon as possible and in close coordination with the carriers. The dispatcher may slow down the driver if he or she is driving a few minutes earlier or delay some connection if needed to guarantee the transfer.
Usually dispatching centre ends at around 9pm, however, the situation in operation and the need to ensure the connection of evening connections mainly to the surroundings of Prague often require a night shift.
