Ljubljana - Three times a charm for the city of Nijmegen (NL). The Dutch city won the award for Green Capital 2018 and may call itself the greenest city in Europe for the year 2018. Contestants in the final in the Slovenia capital Ljubljana were another Dutch city - Hertogenbosch - and the Swedish city Umea.
The award for greenest and most sustainable city of Europe has been awarded since 2010.
In a press release the mayor of Nijmegen Bruls says he’s very proud of the award. ‘We owe this award to a large group of enthusiastic people who will go for ‘green’ and make sure our city becomes more sustainable. They are the living prove that a better world starts with your own behavior.’ According to Bruls. It was the third try of the city to win the award.
Stockholm, Hamburg, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Nantes, Copenhagen, Bristol, Ljubljana and Essen are all previous winners of the prestigious price.
The award is meant for a city which leads the way on environmental friendly policies, like sustainable energy, green economy, sustainable public transport and bike transportation, sustainable waste management and sustainable water management.
